Hello,
This week I am working on a Sgraffito process. We have to create a Sgraffito around the idea of some specific kind of food material such as a cereal bowl. I decided on making a orange juice vase, which is important to me because I always have fresh orange juice when I am home. I decided that my design is going to be multiple tree branches around the base of the vase with two birds, a raven and northern cardinal, meeting near the tip of the vase. I might make the handler of the vase look like a tree trunk. To start this process, I had to create my vase. I had to grab a piece of clay before sketching it out to make the bottom or base of my vase. Later, I just started to coil the entire piece. Going from small to big before going small then big. After I had my vase the size that I needed, I began to curve the clay to look how I wanted it to look before making the tip of the vase. After that, I began to smooth it out on the outside and inside with a modeling tool, a spoon, and a paint brush. I let the piece dry out for a bit before grabbing the black underglaze and I just started to paint it. It's probably going to take four or five time of painting for me to get it perfect. Once I do, I am going to draw a design on a sheet of paper before tracing it on my piece with a washable marker and then I simply going to curve out my design with a curving tool. I decided to curve around my design, meaning that my branches and birds except for the cardinal will be black while the background will be white. This is my second time doing Sgraffito and I always loved Sgraffito. The first time that I did it was really fun so is this time. I really like my design and it means a lot to me because a raven represent one of my favorite Edward Allen Poe's poem and the cardinal was my grandfather's favorite bird. I think that the shape of my vase is a little weird and I guess that if I could redo it, I would dry the piece after a couple of coils in order to keep the base from curving inward. I think that overall my actual Sgraffito was very successful. I really like how my birds ended up looking especially my raven and my branches did turn out looking like branches. On the Northern Cardinal side, I might have added a little bit more details on my branches if I could redo it.
